As a fan of the original movie and books by V.C Andrews, I am a huge fan. Although I gave the movies a 5 star rating, I feel they should have spent more money on the films and feel that instead of a hour and a half movie for each book, they should have had a 12 hour mini series for each book. That way they could have went further with the story and characters and development and captured everything from the novels rather then it being rushed.

For those who haven't read the books, If There Be Thorns switches perspectives for the first time in the series. Cathy narrates Flowers in the Attic and Petals on the Wind, but the narrative switches to Cathy's children Jory and Bart for the third book. And at the start of the novel, neither know the truth about their parents. Jory knows his biological father is a famous ballet dancer who died, and Bart thinks his father is Paul Sheffield. If you never read the books, you will probably like the movies.
The flow wasn't very good, and some of the acting is not great. If you read the books, you will be very disgusted by how much they skipped, altered and just plain screwed up. They all say that if you read and liked the books, then skip the movies. Several hours pass before the police arrive to inform the family of Chris' accident and death. This causes Bart to realize his wrongdoings and how he has pushed people away.
He realizes his love for Cindy and confesses to her when she comes home for Chris' funeral. Bart remorsefully gives a moving eulogy at Chris' funeral and is thankful to Chris for raising him when he did not need to. In the end, Cathy reveals that her children led successful lives away from Foxworth Hall. Jory thrives in his recovery, has married Toni, and they are raising the twins and expecting a child together. However, Cathy chooses to remain at Foxworth Hall as she continues to mourn the loss of her beloved Chris. One day, she goes up to the attic, sits by a window and, as she envisions yellow paper flowers, there is an implication that she had died of a broken heart.
As with the other movies in this series and the books themselves, the whole thing is a trashy hoot. Granted, the film's just giving its audience what it wants; without the creepy-yet-titillating incest angle, Flowers in the Attic would be just another gothic horror novel. The younger, "refill" characters in Seeds are clearly following the family pattern, with Cindy exclaiming.
"When did Bart get so effing hot?" the moment she lays eyes on her adopted brother, and he returns the favor by spying on her while she swims in her bikini. "Seeds of Yesterday" ups the arousing female quotient, which had dipped in the previous movie; however, there are no nipples. The new nymphomaniac in the mansion is sexually-charged Sammi Hanratty (as Cynthia "Cindy" Sheffield). The little blonde girl adopted in the previous story reveals her real worth, herein.
Of course, she was meant to grow up and have sex with anyone willing, which she states is her insatiable "appetite." Also needing, as she says, "a man inside me," is ballet dancer Leah Gibson . Lead actor Maslow attracts every woman in the cast, even getting his mom on her knees for a suggestive scene. Original author Virginia C. Andrews' characters seem only used to show various family members live simply to copulate with each other.
Paul was written out almost completely, and other aspects of the plot were abridged. I also felt like Bart and Cathy's relationship was altered a bit. So, as a book fan, I can't help but nitpick a bit and wish that the movie had more time to flesh out the story and dig a bit deeper. The other option would have probably been to rewrite the sequel pretty much completely to simplify the plot enough to fit it into a TV movie. But fans probably wouldn't have appreciated that, even if it did result in a more structured and better paced film.
For those who have read the books, I'm curious about the general opinion of these adaptations so far. Andrews' Petals on the Wind covers so much territory that it's hard to imagine any movie managing to squeeze everything into the story. Lifetime's adaptation seemed to go out of its way to work as much of the book into the novel, and it still didn't get it all in there.
Assuming Lifetime's planned movies aim to continue to follow the timeline set by Andrews' books, If There Be Thorns would focus on Jory and Bart's childhood, and then Seeds of Yesterday would focus on later years. I won't get into specifics there for those who haven't read the books, but expect even more drama on the horizon. V.C. Andrews published Flowers in the Attic in 1979.

I watched it twice so far & sure to watch it again I'm sure. It's one of the movie you never get sick of watching. A film with a fun high concept but it's focus in the wrong place, Yesterday is charming enough, but ultimately disappointing. It's not a bad movie per se, but it's just not a very good movie. One direction you could go is full fantasy and explore how this parallel world came to be, but the film ultimately ignores that entirely despite giving weird hints here and there that seem to go nowhere. You could go into what this means for the explosion of fame, the ideas of how the music industry has changed from when The Beatles exploded to now, and at the films best moments it does this and it can be interesting.
In the end what the movie is really interested in doing is using this really fun concept to tell another boring love story. Lilly James is charming as all hell, but she's playing a character that just isn't interesting and her motivations are either boring tropes or borderline appalling. The first half of the movie I was kind of into it, but when it became clear any intrigue into the world of fame was going to be sidelined for blind praising of The Beatles and a boring love story, the movie lost me. It still has a certain charm to it, but ultimately it's just a lot of missed potential.
